About Our Placements
Maritza:
For my Service Learning, I was placed at Robert F. Kennedy Elementary School on 195 Nelson St. in Providence Ri 02908. For the past eleven visits and more to come, I was in a fourth grade classroom. The class consists of minority students, mainly African American and Latino, with one Asian student and about three white students as well. My task is to work with students S and A explaining any questions or concerns they might have about the math lesson their teacher is going over. Working on the same thing that the whole class is working on, helps my students don't miss anything important that the teacher is teaching, but at the same time with my extra help they are more on level in comparison to their classmates rather then being behind as they used to be, which makes me fell so great! My experience there has been great, because the teacher in this classroom is just amazing. Mrs. R is a talented woman who has showed me how to be in control of the classroom without having to yell . I have learned so much, but most importantly being in this classroom and school has helped me see examples and connections from our class reading but in real life, making me a better person and future educator.

Julie:
At the beginning of the semester, I was also placed at Robert F. Kennedy. I began visiting the school in February and recently finished after my tenth visit in April. I worked 2 groups of 3 students each in a second grade classroom on reading activities to improve phonics, vocab, comprehension, and fluency. The demographics of the room were similar to those of Maritza's: The majority of the students were children of color (either Black or Hispanic) and the remaining students (less than 10) were either Asian or White. As a music education major, at first I was disappointed I was not able to teach in a music classroom. But after a few weeks I realized that working with this group of students taught me skills that I may not have been able to gain had I been in a music class. I was able to form bonds with them and learn about their experiences as students. I enjoyed working with the students every week, and they were always happy to see me walk in. I learned so much over the past few months, I've learned about my strengths and weaknesses and have noticed myself grow as a person an as a teacher.
